Easily Monitor Project Progress with Tableau Gantt Charts

Gantt charts are a type of visualization that is used to display the progress of tasks or projects over time. They are named after Henry Gantt, who developed the concept in the early 20th century. Gantt charts typically consist of a horizontal bar chart which shows the duration of each task or project, along with a timeline axis that represents the period of time over which the tasks or projects are being completed.

To create a Gantt chart in Tableau, you will need to have your data organized in a specific way, with at least one field representing the start and end dates of each task or project, and another field representing the name or description of the task or project. Here’s a general outline of the steps you can follow:

1. Connect to your data source in Tableau and select the fields you want to use for your Gantt chart.
2. Drag the field representing the start date of each task or project onto the Columns shelf and select a date data type.
3. Drag the field representing the end date of each task or project onto the Columns shelf and select a date data type.
4. Drag the field representing the name or description of each task or project onto the Rows shelf.
5. Right-click on the start date field in the Columns shelf and select “Continuous” from the context menu.
6. Right-click on the end date field in the Columns shelf and select “Continuous” from the context menu.
7. Select a Gantt chart as the visualization type. Tableau will automatically create a Gantt chart using the fields you have placed on the shelves.
8. Customize the appearance and behavior of your Gantt chart using the options in the “Format” and “Analyze” menus.
