What is an Atom?

An atom is the smallest building block of everything in the universe. Everything around us, including plants, animals, and even you, is made up of atoms. Imagine atoms as tiny Lego blocks that combine together to form everything you see and touch.

Atoms are incredibly small, so small that you can’t see them with your eyes or even with a regular microscope. They are like the hidden superheroes of the world! Inside an atom, there are even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have a negative charge.

These particles are always busy buzzing around inside the atom. The protons and neutrons stay together in the center, called the nucleus, like the mighty nucleus of an atom family. The electrons are like the energetic kids, zipping around the nucleus in specific paths called orbits or shells.

Atoms are unique because different elements are made up of different combinations of these particles. Elements are like different types of Lego blocks, each with its own special properties. For example, oxygen atoms make up the air we breathe, while carbon atoms are found in things like diamonds and pencils.

Atoms are also friendly and like to stick together to form molecules. Just like how many Lego blocks can be combined to build a magnificent castle, atoms join together to create different substances. Water, for instance, is made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms hugging tightly.
