The Art of Tableau Data Extraction

Data extraction is the process of making a local copy of data from a data source in Tableau. This copy, known as a data extract, can be used to boost Tableau performance by minimising the amount of data that must be loaded from the original data source. Data extracts can also be used to share data with others who may not have access to the original data source.

To create a data extract in Tableau, follow these steps:

  1. Connect to a data source in Tableau.
  2. Select the data that you want to include in the extract.
  3. Click the “Data” menu and choose “Extract Data.”
  4. Choose where you want to save the extract and press “OK.”

After creating the data extract, it can be utilised in place of the original data source by going to “Data” > “Extract” > “Use Extract.” The data extract can also be renewed in order to reflect any changes made to the original data source.

It’s worth noting that data extracts can be large and take up a lot of storage space. It’s a good idea to carefully consider which data is necessary for the extract and to delete the extract when it is no longer needed.

A TDE file is a highly compressed and optimized version of the data that can be used to improve the performance of Tableau workbooks and dashboards.

  • Improved performance: Extracting data from a data source and saving it as a TDE file can significantly improve the performance of Tableau workbooks and dashboards, as it reduces the amount of data that needs to be loaded and processed.
  • Offline access: TDE files can be used to access data offline, which can be useful when working in a disconnected environment or when the data source is not available.
  • Data privacy: Extracting data from a data source and saving it as a TDE file can also provide an added level of security and privacy, as it allows users to work with a subset of the data that does not contain sensitive information.
  • Data Manipulation: TDE files can be modified and manipulated before being imported into Tableau, which can be useful for cleaning or transforming data.

To create a TDE file, users can select the data they want to extract from the data source, and then choose “Extract” from the Data menu. Once the TDE file is created, it can be used in Tableau workbooks and dashboards just like a regular data source.
