Sleek Data Visualization with Tableau Donut Charts

Donut charts are a type of chart in Tableau that is used to display data as a proportion of a whole. They are similar to pie charts, but instead of having a single slice for each data point, the data is displayed as a series of rings or “slices” around the center of the chart.

A donut chart in Tableau is a variation of a pie chart, where a hole is cut out of the center, creating a “doughnut” shape. It is used to display proportionate data in a circular format, with each slice of the donut representing a different category and the size of the slice representing the proportion of the data that falls into that category.

In Tableau, donut charts can be created by connecting to a data source, dragging a dimension to the Columns or Rows shelf, and a measure to the opposite shelf. Then, you can use the “Donut” option under the Show Me tab to create the chart. This will create a chart with the dimension representing the different categories, and the measure determining the size of the slices.

To create a donut chart in Tableau, follow these steps:

  1. Open Tableau and connect to the data you want to use.
  2. Drag and drop the measure you want to use for the size of the slices onto the Size field in the Marks card.
  3. Drag and drop the dimension you want to use to slice the data onto the Color field in the Marks card.
  4. Select the pie chart option from the Show Me panel.
  5. In the Marks card, select the Pie mark type.
  6. Customize the appearance of the chart by adjusting the marks, labels, and other chart options as needed.

Donut charts are useful for displaying data as a proportion of a whole and can help you see patterns and trends that might not be apparent in other types of charts. They can also be used to compare the size of different data points to each other.

Donut charts are useful for showing proportionate data in a circular format and for comparing the relative sizes of different categories. They can be especially useful when the categories have similar values, as the inner ring of the donut chart allows for more precise differentiation between the categories.

Donut charts are used to show the breakdown of the whole into its components, it can be used when the data is of categorical type and wants to show the proportion of each category within the whole.
