What is a Verb?
Any word that describes an action, state, or occurrence, i.e. condition of existence of a person or an object, is called a verb. In English, verbs are primarily used with nouns or pronouns to indicate what the subject is doing or what is happening around the doers of the verb. Some examples of verbs used in sentences are as follows:
“She sings beautifully.” (The verb “sings” describes an action.)
“The cat is sleeping.” (The verb “is” indicates a state.)
“The sun rises in the east.” (The verb “rises” describes an occurrence.)
Verbs are a crucial part of any sentence and are used to convey meaning and a sense of movement or action associated with the subject or the doer of the sentence. In English, verbs can be inflected (modified in form) to indicate tense (e.g., “sing,” “sang,” “sung”, etc.) or to show whether there is singular or plural (e.g., “sing,” “sings” etc.) subject performing the verb.
There are many types of verbs in English. Some of the commonly used types of verbs include the following: action verbs (e.g., “run,” “jump,” “sing”, “swim”,” move”, etc.), linking verbs (e.g., “be,” “seem,” “appear,” disappear” etc.), and helping verbs (e.g., “will,” “can,” “should” “may” etc.). Understanding how to use verbs correctly is an integral part of learning the English language and plays an essential role in improving one’s English speaking capability. Since English is an internationally recognised language, you need to know verbs properly.
