What is Friction?

Friction is a force that happens when two objects rub against each other, making it harder for them to move smoothly. Imagine you’re trying to push a heavy box across the floor. You might notice that it doesn’t slide easily. That’s because of friction.

Friction occurs because of the roughness or stickiness between surfaces. When you try to move an object, like the box, the tiny bumps and imperfections on its surface interact with the bumps and imperfections on the floor. These interactions create a resistance that makes it difficult to move the object.

Friction has both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it helps us walk and run without slipping. When we wear shoes, the friction between the soles and the ground keeps us stable. On the other hand, friction can slow down or stop objects from moving. That’s why it’s harder to push a heavy object than a light one.

You can also see friction in action when you rub your hands together quickly. You might feel your hands getting warmer. That’s because friction between your hands creates heat energy.

There are different types of friction. Static friction happens when objects are not moving, like when a book stays on a table. Sliding friction occurs when objects slide against each other, like a sled sliding on snow. Rolling friction happens when objects roll, like a bicycle wheel rolling on the road.
