What is Myositis?
Myositis is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and weakness of muscles. It can affect people of any age, but it is more commonly diagnosed in people between 40 to 60 years of age. These symptoms usually deteriorate gradually over time. You may be exhausted and trip or fall after performing simple activities like walking or standing for some time.
There are several types of myositis, including polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and inclusion body myositis. These conditions have different symptoms and treatment approaches, but they all involve inflammation of the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for movement.
Symptoms of myositis may include muscle weakness, especially in the neck, upper arms, and upper legs, difficulty climbing stairs or rising from a seated position, and difficulty swallowing or speaking. Other symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, fever, and shortness of breath.
For all those suffering from chronic autoimmune diseases, like idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, generally termed myositis, stress can cause even more damage. Medical science has proved that stress can diminish our immune system, cause disease, and increase inflammation.
Myositis is typically diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. Treatment may include medications to suppress the immune system, physical therapy, and other supportive care. Our treatment’s main aim includes reducing inflammation and improving muscle strength and function.
Since prevention is better than cure, we must undergo a routine medical checkup at least once every year. If one gets any earlier symptoms of myositis, one must visit the required medical specialist and take the necessary preventive measures.
