Data Reporting Made Easy with Power BI Report Server

Power BI Report Server: It is an on-premises server that enables organizations to publish and manage Power BI reports, as well as traditional paginated reports, in a centralized location. 

Power BI reports can be hosted in either an on-premises or cloud-based environment. Power BI Service is the name of the cloud-based Power BI hosting. Power BI Report Server is the name of the on-premises variant.

A particular version of SQL Server Reporting Services that can host Power BI reports is called Power BI Report Server. You don’t need a SQL Server installation disc to operate Power BI Report Server because it comes with setup files. Downloadable setup files (explained in the very next section). Both Power BI Reports and Reporting Services (SSRS), also known as Paginated Reports, can be hosted on the Power BI report server.

It provides a range of features and capabilities, including:

  • Report deployment and distribution: Power BI Report Server allows you to publish reports and make them available to users within your organization. You can choose to share reports through a web portal, by email, or by embedding them in other applications.
  • Report authoring: Power BI Report Server includes a report authoring tool called Report Builder, which enables users to create, edit, and publish reports using a drag-and-drop interface.
  • Data security and governance: Power BI Report Server allows you to control access to reports and data sources, as well as set permissions for users and groups. It also integrates with enterprise security and identity systems, such as Active Directory.
  • Scheduled data refresh: Power BI Report Server can refresh the data in your reports on a scheduled basis, ensuring that users always have access to the most up-to-date information.
  • Customization and extensibility: Power BI Report Server provides APIs and tools for customizing and extending the platform, allowing you to build custom applications and integrations.

Keep in mind that Power BI Report Server is an on-premises solution and requires installation and maintenance by your IT department. It is separate from the cloud-based Power BI service, which provides similar capabilities but does not require on-premises deployment.
