What is Fraction?

A fraction is a way or calculation of representing a part of a group. It is written as a ratio of two numbers, with the number on top called the numerator and the number on the bottom called the denominator. For example, the fraction “1/2” represents 1 part of a whole divided into two equal parts.

Every fraction’s numerator and denominator are split in half by a horizontal bar known as the fractional bar.

The denominator displays the number of pieces into which the whole has been divided. It is situated below the fractional bar in the lower part of the fraction.

The top part of the fraction, above the fractional bar, contains the numerator, which determines how many sections of the fraction are picked or displayed.

Fractions, like 3.5 or 7.9, are used to express amounts that are not whole numbers. Any kind of quantity, including measurements, monetary sums, and proportions, can be represented by them.

By dividing the numerator and denominator with the same number until no common factors remain, fractions can be simpler. For instance, by reducing the numerator and denominator by 2, the fraction “6/8” can be reduced to “3/4”.

Basic arithmetic operations can add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. When adding or subtracting fractions, it’s crucial to maintain the same denominator in mind and to look for a common denominator when doing so with different denominators.

After being simplified, equivalent fractions are those that express the same value. To determine equivalent fractions of a particular fraction:

The given fraction’s numerator and denominator can both be multiplied by the same number.

The provided fraction can be divided by the same number in both the numerator and denominator.
