Converting Decimals to Fractions

You can use the following procedures to change a decimal into a fraction:

As a fraction with a denominator of 1, write the decimal as follows:

0.75 = 0.75/1

The digits to the right side of the decimal point are multiplied by a power of 10 to multiply the numerator and denominator. This will change the decimal to a fraction with a power of 10 with the denominator.

For instance, you would multiply both the numerator and the denominator by ten if the decimal had a digit to the right of the decimal point. You must multiply the numerator and denominator by 100 if the decimal has two digits to the right of the decimal point.

If the decimal 0.75 includes a digit to the right of the decimal point, continuing with the example above, you will multiply both the numerator and the denominator by 10 to obtain:

0.75/1 = (0.75 x 10)/(1 x 10) = 7.5/10

Divide the numerator and denominator with the same number until they can no longer be divided to further simplify the fraction.

For instance, you can obtain the following result by dividing the numerator and denominator with the fraction 7.5/10 by 5:

7.5/10 = (7.5/5)/(10/5) = 1.5/2

So, the decimal 0.75 can be converted to the fraction 1.5/2.

It’s important to remember that when converting a decimal to a fraction, you should always simplify the fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number till they cannot be divided any further. This will give you the most simplified form of the fraction.
